has anybody done any fibreglassing from moulds.
i have aquired some moulds and bits and bats but i.m not 100% sure how to use them. i have some moulds that are smooth inside and some that are rough.i just don't know if the rough ones are finished moulds and i'm not up on gel coat mixtures ,realising agent, cemicals etc etc. i'm not an odiot and i have done a lot of body in my time and i've worked with matting on bits in the past but 'm totaly lost. anyway if you do know about this subject and could explain it to me in english i would be very gratefull thanks chris |

i used to work 4 a company making garden ponds, the smooth side is what will be the outside of the item your making so lets say its a bumper, you will spray the gel coat onto that smooth side, let that set, it can set in its own time can be helped with heat but we never bothered as you can determine the setting time with how much catalyst you use, any runs will appear on the outside (front of bumper), so after thats sets you will apply the glass (depending on your set up, i.e if you are sprayin the glass on or layering it on by hand), we used spray guns and it came out in thin pieces which the gun mixed with resin and catalyst to make it set, o it this way the glass was then rolled flat and smooth into corners etc by hand by metal rollers or paint brushes (like your average paint roller), these were dipped into acetone to stop the glass sticking to the rollers (same for the brushes), the more you use the better, then basically let that set. i cant say it will be exactly the same as i dont know your moulds etc but what you will do is use plastic wedges and tap them in between the mould and the gelcoat side of what youve just made (after its completely set), due to the size of what we were making we had blow holes and used a air line to for the product away from the mould (have to be carefull as there were cases were the product blew up, dues to it being wet or tight, the tightness happens when the mouldstarts to loose its shine, it may need waxing with special release wax, we would ruffly getting ten items off each mould before they went for a buff. if you need any more info just shout me. sorry for the essay lol

also on the edge of you mould deppending on the size, we used to put wax around the edge not on the shiny side at all as this will not let the gelcoat set on it, it makes the gel and glass not set on the edge therefore meaning you can tap a wedge in and realease it easier. sorry forgot this bit, you want to do this before anything.
