Oil pump change for mk1-mk3 inc corrado/golf/passat/etc etc. :)
pdf here if pics ever dissapear. Thanks to gav on cgti for making the pdf version :thumb:
First of all drain the old oil from the sump-19mm spanner.

Next thing is to tackle the 20x 10mm headed sump bolts.
start by removing the 2 hardest which are up the side of the g/box/sump.
you are best off using a wobble jointed socket or a propper wobble extension, which i didnt actually need.

The 2 hard to reach 10mm bolts are pictured here.

Once the sump is off (- 20 bolts) this is what you will see.
the oil pump with plastic baffle attatched, held with 2x 13mm headed bolts-remove these.
Pic shows my pickup fulla poo too, this was probably the cause of pump failure here.

So now the pump is removed you need to detatch the plastic baffle.
this is done by holding 2 or 3 of the clips while twisting the pump.

Now clean out the sump/remove old gasket.
and clean/remove old gasket from the engine block.
I used a chisel, you can use a stanley blade or good wide flat screwdriver.

Clean the mounting face of the oil pump, just wipe away excess oil,no need to remove the carbon type build up.
DONT BOLT UP THE PUMP YET! This pic shows how the pump works off the intermediate shaft, the oil pump shaft just slots through and sits in the keyed gear.
So when refitting new pump, line it up by eye and turn it side to side, you will know if its good as it will bolt up flush.

You now need to prime the new pump.
Do this by sitting the pickup in some engine oil,and keep turning the pump shaft clockwise.
When oil overspills out of the top,its primed.

Refit the plastic baffle to the newly primed pump.
you will have to keep it upright or else the oil will spill out.

Stick a little thread lock on the oil pump bolts and bolt back in position, tightening the bolts evenly.
tighten to 14 lb ft or 20 Nm.

Now all you need to do is,
- Replace the 20x 10mm sump bolts and tighten to,
- Socket head 5 lb ft or 8 Nm.
- Hexagon head 14 lb ft or 20 Nm.
- (have fun!)
- Make sure the sump plug is in and tightened to 22 lb ft or 30 Nm
- Fill with oil,and away you go.
Obviously its a good idea to change the oil filter at the same time as doing this.
